The “Gotcha” Fees: What Las Vegas Residents Need to Watch for on a Towing Invoice

← Back to Blog

You’re already stressed from a breakdown — the last thing you need is to arrive at the impound lot and find an invoice full of charges you never agreed to. Unfortunately, deceptive billing is a real problem in the towing industry. Here’s what to watch for and how to protect yourself in Clark County.

The Most Common Surprise Charges

1. Fuel Surcharges

Some companies add a “fuel surcharge” of $15–$50 on top of the quoted rate without disclosing it upfront. This is only legal if it’s part of their filed rate schedule with the NTA — ask to see their rate card if you’re charged this.

2. Administrative Fees

Labels like “administrative fee,” “processing fee,” or “documentation fee” are often invented line items. Unless the charge is in the company’s NTA-filed rates, it has no legal basis.

3. Storage Fees Counted from Time of Tow, Not Time of Impound

Storage fees should begin when the vehicle enters the lot, not the moment it’s hooked up. Some companies try to count the drive time as “storage.” That’s not legal.

4. After-Hours Release Fees

These can be legitimate if disclosed upfront — many impound lots charge extra to release vehicles outside business hours. The key is disclosure before the fact. If they didn’t tell you about an after-hours fee before you agreed to the tow, challenge it.

5. Lien Fees and Notification Fees

On non-consensual tows, companies are required to notify vehicle owners. Some add a “notification fee” for doing something they’re legally required to do anyway. This is a fee worth disputing.

Your Rights on Payment

Nevada towing companies must accept credit and debit cards for payment of towing and storage fees — cash-only requirements are a significant red flag. You’re entitled to an itemized written receipt before you pay. Review every line item, and if something doesn’t make sense, ask for an explanation in writing.

At Skye Canyon Towing, our pricing is straightforward: we quote before we hook, itemize every charge, and never add surprise fees. Call (702) 830-7211 for honest, upfront towing service.
